From the station, the visitor core unfolds as a short westward walk rather than a collection of separate districts. Stora Torget arrives within about eight minutes, followed by the river, cathedral, Gustavianum, and the historic university streets. Most of that chain stays level or gently graded, with frequent central crossings over the Fyrisån and few meaningful detours. The effort changes near Drottninggatan, where the route rises toward Carolina Rediviva, the castle, and the Botanical Garden. Linnaeus Garden forms a northern extension, while City Garden pulls the route south along the river. Gamla Uppsala is different: it belongs to the weekend, but not to the walkable core.

Why Uppsala Works So Well on Foot
Uppsala Central sits close enough to the visitor core that walking starts immediately after arrival. Stora Torget is about 550 meters away, while Gustavianum is roughly one kilometer from the station. The cathedral, Gustavianum and University Main Building then sit within the same compact historic cluster. Carolina Rediviva continues the route uphill, followed by Uppsala Castle and the Botanical Garden. Fyrisån cuts through the center, but frequent nearby crossings keep both banks connected. The river works better as an orientation line than as a barrier.

Walking conditions are generally strong across the core. Svartbäcksgatan has wider sidewalks, tactile guidance and more pedestrian space. Cyclists can still travel in both directions there, so visitors should watch for bicycle movement at shared or closely adjacent spaces. Uppsala’s cycling culture is visible in these shared spaces, and it can also create minor pedestrian friction.
Best Areas to Stay for Walking
The easiest base is the central corridor between Uppsala Central, Stora Torget and the cathedral. Hotels near the station minimize luggage walking and still leave the historic quarter within minutes. Staying around Trädgårdsgatan or the cathedral places the university quarter, Carolina Rediviva and castle approach almost outside the door. There is little reason to choose an outer district for a first two-day visit unless price or a specific campus matters.
Useful Walking Times
Uppsala Central → Stora Torget: about 550 meters, or roughly eight minutes. Uppsala Central → Gustavianum: about one kilometer, or 15 minutes. Uppsala Central → Uppsala Cathedral: about 10–12 minutes to S:t Eriks torg beside the cathedral.
Stora Torget → Linnaeus Garden: about seven minutes. Uppsala Cathedral → Linnaeus Garden: about 10 minutes. Botanical Garden → Linnaeus Garden: about 20–25 minutes. Botanical Garden → Carolina Rediviva: about 10 minutes.
These are practical planning estimates rather than guaranteed walking times. Crossings, weather, terrain and individual pace can change the actual time.
A 2-Day Walking Route
Day 1 — Station, Cathedral and the Castle Ridge
Walking route
Day 1 — Station, Cathedral and the Castle Ridge
- Uppsala Central Station
- Stora Torget
- Uppsala Cathedral
- Gustavianum
- Uppsala University Main Building
- Carolina Rediviva
- Uppsala Castle
- Uppsala Botanical Garden
Start at Uppsala Central and walk west to Stora Torget before crossing toward the cathedral. Continue to Gustavianum and the University Main Building without leaving the historic university cluster. Drottninggatan then begins the day’s only meaningful climb toward Carolina Rediviva. Continue uphill to the castle, then finish in the Botanical Garden rather than descending and retracing the same streets. This route keeps the short, flat core first and saves the concentrated elevation for the final third.

Day 2 — Linnaeus Garden and the Fyrisån
Walking route
Day 2 — Linnaeus Garden and the Fyrisån
- Linnaeus Garden
- Svartbäcksgatan
- Upplandsmuseet / S:t Eriks torg
- Fyristorg
- Islandsfallet
- City Garden (Stadsträdgården)
- Uppsala Central Station
Begin north of the center at Linnaeus Garden, then follow Svartbäcksgatan toward the cathedral-side river crossings. Use S:t Eriks torg and Fyristorg to join the Fyrisån instead of repeating Day 1’s university streets. Continue south along the river to Islandsfallet and City Garden, then return east to Uppsala Central. Gamla Uppsala is a worthwhile optional extension, but it should replace part of this day rather than extend the walk. Public transport is the practical choice for Gamla Uppsala if you want to add it to the weekend without turning the day into a long suburban walk.

Using Transit in Uppsala
Most central sightseeing does not require public transport. UL buses become useful for Gamla Uppsala, outer neighborhoods and energy-saving trips beyond the compact historic center.
UL offers local tickets through digital and onboard payment options. Fares, ticket validity and service frequencies can change, so check current UL information before travel, especially for evening or weekend journeys.
Getting to Uppsala Without a Car
Stockholm Arlanda Airport has direct rail and bus connections to Uppsala Central, making a car unnecessary for most international arrivals. Several rail operators may serve the airport–Uppsala corridor, so compare current journey times and fares before travel.
Airport buses provide another direct option. Once you reach Uppsala Central, Stora Torget, the cathedral and the university quarter are all within practical walking distance. Check current UL, rail-operator and airport information for your travel date.
When a Car Helps
A private car adds little to the standard Uppsala weekend. The central sights are close together, and Gamla Uppsala has a direct bus connection. A car becomes more useful for rural Uppland, dispersed countryside attractions or multi-stop regional trips. Stockholm, Sigtuna and other regional destinations are better treated as separate excursions.
Walking Limitations and Practical Tips
The main physical effort comes from Carolinabacken and the continued rise toward the castle. Historic surfaces and bicycle movement can also slow pedestrians even where distances remain short, while the Fyrisån creates little difficulty because central bridges keep both banks well connected.
Street works and public-realm projects can temporarily change individual routes around the center. Follow current local signs and check municipal or UL notices when construction affects your itinerary.
Seasonal Walking Note
Long summer daylight makes Uppsala’s compact routes easy to spread across a full day, while winter snow and ice can make the castle rise and historic paving more demanding. Access points in parks and gardens may also change seasonally, so check current opening information when visiting in winter.
Bottom Line
Uppsala works best as a walking-first city break centered on the station, historic center, cathedral and university quarter. Expect one deliberate climb toward Carolina Rediviva and the castle, and use public transport for Gamla Uppsala or other outer stops. A private car adds little to a standard two-day visit.
